Alright, so this ‘RTX 4080M’ desktop card, it’s a thing in China, right? It’s basically salvaged laptop silicon, a mobile core, shoved into a desktop form factor. This whole situation, it came about after the US banned RTX 4090 sales in the region, so local sellers had to get creative, find alternatives. A Chinese reviewer, Jie Mou on Bilibili, tested one of these. He paid 2,000 RMB for it, which was about $300 at the time, but now they’re going for like 2,700 to 2,800 RMB, so around $400.

That price jump, it’s because of the component crisis, you know, the AI rush, it’s affecting everything. The card, it’s got 12GB of GDDR6 memory, connected with a 192-bit interface. The GPU itself runs at 1290 MHz, boosts to 1665 MHz, and the memory is at 2250 MHz. Power draw, that’s interesting, it only pulled around 100W in games. The mobile RTX 4080’s TGP can go up to 175W, so it’s underpowered, probably a custom BIOS or drivers holding it back. Now, performance.

The reviewer compared it to the AMD RX 9070 GRE, because they’re in a similar price bracket in China, both with 12GB VRAM. The RX 9070 GRE, that officially launched globally at $549 on June 2, 2026. It’s got 48 RDNA 4 Compute Units and 12GB of GDDR6 memory on a 192-bit interface, and its power draw is rated at 220W maximum. In 3DMark TimeSpy, the 4080M scored 18,600 points. That’s okay, but for the price, it’s not great.

The RX 9070 GRE is generally faster. For example, in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K High settings, the 4080M got 49 FPS, but the RX 9070 GRE hit 76 FPS. That’s a big difference, like a 35.5% loss for the 4080M. In Forza Horizon 5 at 4K High, the 4080M got 84 FPS, while the RX 9070 GRE managed 107 FPS.

The 4080M was slower by 21.5% there. But, there’s one game where the 4080M actually won, and that was PUBG. At 2K Ultra, the 4080M got over 340 FPS, and the RX 9070 GRE got over 240 FPS, so the 4080M was about 41.7% faster. Delta Force was close too, the 4080M got 10 more FPS at 4K.The verdict, it’s pretty clear, the RTX 4080M isn’t a smart buy at current Chinese market prices. You can get new, warrantied cards like the RX 9070 GRE or even an RTX 5060 Ti for similar or slightly more money, and they perform better.

The only real argument for the 4080M is its low 100W power draw, which could be good for small form factor builds, like ITX systems where thermal headroom is limited.NVIDIA, they just announced some strong quarterly results, EPS of $1.87, that beat estimates. Revenue was $81.61 billion, topping expectations. This was announced on July 5, 2026. They also increased their quarterly dividend to $0.25 and authorized an additional $80 billion share buyback.

That’s a lot of money. This whole thing with salvaged laptop silicon, it’s a symptom of the GPU market, right? Prices are high, there’s a RAM shortage, it’s making things difficult. People are looking for cheaper options, even if they’re unofficial and without warranty. NVIDIA even brought back the RTX 3060 12GB, a five-year-old card, at $339.99, which isn’t much less than a newer RTX 5060.

It’s wild. I mean, I bought some AMD stock, ticker AMD, back on December 1, 2023, for $121.39 a share. I’m holding it until it hits $600, or if the market just completely collapses, then I’ll re-evaluate. It’s been a good run, but you never know with these things, right? So, yeah, the RTX 4080M, it’s a niche product, a workaround for specific market conditions. It’s not a performance king, not a value king, but it exists.

It shows the desperation, the creativity, in the market when official channels are constrained and prices are high. It’s a sign of the times, really.
